It’s disturbing to me how downhill music has gone between the 1990s and the 2000s, especially in terms of feminist icons. PJ, Björk, and Tori are positive role models for women in every sense of the word. They’re still making music that pushes limits and provokes deep, philosophical thought. Although their fan base has declined to the rabidly devoted, they still put their best foot forward and create magic, magic that is often ignored or pushed to the wayside in favor of the women below them.
Instead of raising up and promoting TRUE feminist musicians, our culture would rather glorify artists like Lady Gaga, who uses the LGBT community as a tool to further her career; Nicki Minaj, who is attempting to build a solid, stable career through bland collaborations instead of focusing on making a strong, cohesive record; and Katy Perry…there is too much I could say about her. It’s just sad. :/
